CHRISTMAS AT THE HARPER

Many are the moments that make the perfect Christmas. We have them all here in Norfolk – a peaceful village setting with the peal of Church bells, crisp winter walks in salty sea air and just the right amount of decadence. The scene is just as it should be – a roaring wood-burner, a well-stocked bar, deep, soft sofas, and some lovely little surprises for good measure.

Whether it’s a romantic escape for two, crisp wintery coast walks with four-legged friends or a treasured festive memory shared with family and friends, a Christmassy escape to The Harper is just what the doctor ordered.

Below you will find a little taster (an amuse bouche, if you will) of what our three-night Christmas extravaganza 2024 will include:

Christmas Eve

As you arrive on Christmas Eve, expect welcome Champagne while you unpack, followed by a sumptuous three-course meal and (new for 2024) an evening filled with festive glee. Christmas by candlelight (led by our very own House Manager) will get your festive spirit in full swing – think candles, Christmas Classics, and some spiced Cab to loosen the vocal chords – and the Norfolk air thick with festive merriment.

Christmas morning

After you awake on Christmas day, while Santa himself has been slaving away, you’ll wrest yourself from your own Snowman dreams to a heightened version of Christmas morning excitement. Our Christmas breakfast awaits. Start with a Buck’s Fizz and follow with options such as Brancaster-gin-and-betroot-smoked salmon or a full English (with Norfolk fruit pig black pudding and the golden yolks of locally sourced free-range egg). Afterwards, a gentle saunter round to the Bluebell village pub, where you’ll join us for crackling fires, local ales, warm gingerbread, eggnog and festive surprises.

Christmas lunch

Back to The Harper (the long way round if you want to feel you’ve worked off breakfast before lunch begins!) as we welcome all to dine for Christmas lunch, a sumptuous 5-course locally-sourced feast with all the trimmings, in the decked halls of Ivy’s and Stanleys, featuring our outsized Norwegian Fir and (you guessed it) festive music. Afterwards, there’ll be much to choose from: whether it’s a classic Christmas movie in the Den with home-popped cinnamon and brown sugar popcorn, games from our boardgame compendium or a local coast walk 3 minutes drive away in Morston.

Christmas night

As dusk settles in, you’ll return for our inaugural Christmas Quiz where there will be plenty of festive fun to be had and grand prizes to win, accompanied by our Ghost of Christmas Present Buffet. The Horn of Plenty will deliver a decadent buffet of local cheeses, cured meats, crudités, fresh and dried fruits, nuts, crackers an array of chocolate treats and bejewelled fruit pastilles. With full bellies and droopy eyes, you’ll perhaps enjoy one final nightcap (on us – it’s Christmas!) before you slip back into your soft sheets.

Boxing day

The final full day of your festive escape will be no less packed with festive joy. You’ll kick things off with a Boxing Day breakfast (go on, have a Spiced Bloody Mary) to fuel some bracing Norfolk ramblings. Rosy-cheeked and refreshed, you’ll help yourselves to our Boxing Day afternoon buffet where a twist on something classic awaits. Glazed, clove-studded Norfolk hams, cured fish, creamed potatoes and an array of homemade chutneys and pickles are the stars of this resplendent array. Once again, the festive feast will be accompanied by the hark of Christmas songs and plenty of good cheer.

Not just for Christmas…

As firm Christmas fans, this year we will be extending the joy across the whole of December so that, even if plans are already in place for The Big Day itself, you need not miss out. This year, Christmas at The Harper begins the moment you crack open the first door on your advent calendar. Expect mirthful menus, Christmas cocktails and other Santa surprises.
